Classic strawberry banana milkshake is the best way to use up the abundance of fresh summer strawberries and ripe bananas. This is an easy recipe that requires only 3 main ingredients, but it’s good to have on hand if you’re not sure what is the best bananas to strawberries to milk ratio!
I have a simple breakfast version, which is more calorie-friendly and healthy, and a 'dessert’ version with ice cream and whipped cream!
Ingredients:
Ingredients ratio: The basic ingredients ratio is 2 large bananas to about 26 oz (750g) and 1 cup of milk. I also like to add some vanilla extract to flavor the milkshake and some sweetener if my strawberries are not super sweet.
Sweetener: You can use really any sweetener that you like – sugar / light brown sugar / xylitol as a calorie-friendly option / honey / coconut sugar.
For a more indulgent version: I add 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream instead of vanilla extract and sugar and also decorate the top of the milkshake with whipped cream. You can also sprinkle some shaved chocolate or sprinkles on top!
This milkshake comes out rather thick so if you prefer it on runny side, add more milk.
Frozen version: if you would like your milkshake more thick and super cold and don’t want to use ice cream, you can freeze the bananas (and optionally a small portion of strawberries) and blend with the other ingredients. I don’t recommend freezing all the strawberries because there are simply too many. You can use frozen strawberries but defrost them first, them mix them (strawberries and their juices) with the other ingredients.
How to make it:
You can use a stand blender or a hand (immersion) blender to mix the ingredients. If using a hand blender bear in mind that this recipe yields a lot, the whole milkshake filled the 7 cup (1.8 L) container of my stand blender.
Peel the bananas, cut off the strawberry tops, measure out the milk, add to a blender container and mix with the other ingredients, depending on which version you’re making (vanilla extract and sweetener of your choice for a breakfast version and ice cream for the dessert version). Mix until smooth.
How to store this milkshake:
I will keep in the fridge for 24 hours. Tastes the same as freshly made but it will be thicker, so you can dilute it a bit with milk if you wish. Make sure to stir it thoroughly before serving it.
